Michael Trent sat quietly in the barn loft overlooking the Trent Farm. Marion Trent was busily feeding the seven horses that they owned. Laura Lake rode casually up to the edge of the Trent's corral, aboard her pet horse, Stacy.
Both children had grown up strong and healthy. The Trents had to assume that Mike's true parents had been killed in the tornadoes of 1995. Rather than send the boy to the Department of Child Services, the Trents had adopted him.
Laura's Aunt Wanda, her legal guardian since the poor child's parents had been ruthlessly murdered, had given up on any hope of finding her sister and brother in law's killers.
The sheriff had written the case off in 2002, as a simple robbery gone bad. Laura and Mike's mutual friends, Shana Springbrook and Tim Servo weren't so sure. They had developed a penchant for trouble, both had insatiable curiosity.
Shana was the story editor for the Falcon Claw High school paper, called Falcon Heart. The wanna bee journalist had noted that over the years a number of 'unusual circumstances' had developed in what should have been a sleepy agricultural town.
